GO PIGHUNTING. -» U . . ■' *— I At tlm New Plymouth Magistrate's Court on- Thursday (reports the Herald) four youths —’Edgar Henry Meuli, Williiun Thompson Hey, Kingsley M. Meuli, and Ronald T. Ti<as»: —were charged until appropriating to their own \ise at Okau a horse valued at £65 the property of Frederick Calvert. The police stated the youths were employed at Tariki and had gone to Okau where,.they liad approached Calvert for . tl>e hire of a horse.. Calr vert had told them that ho did not have one available, but later found that they had taken a draught horse from his pul doth and rode it in turns 'to Waitanga, their, destination. They subsequently returned and left the horse on the road.

All pleaded guilty to save the expense of bringing witnesses from but Edgar Henry Meuli said they had not taken the horse from the paddock but found it grazing on the road. They did not know that it was Calvert's, and they had taken the draught liecauso it was the only one he could catch. They worked at ,Tariki and had gone into Okau on a week-end pig-shooting expedition.

“I shall look upon, the matter in the light of a youthful escapade,” said the Magistrate, who reminded the defendants of the seriousness of the offence which, viewed l in another light, might have resulted in imprisonment without the option of a fine.

There were no expenses in connection with the charge and the four were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
