Press Association—Copyright. Aus tralian and N.Z, Cable Association. New York, August 23.
At WilHamstowjn, Massachusetts, Sir Edward Grigg, addressing the Institute of Politics, defended British Imperialism. He predicted that the United States in future would bo compelled to become increasingly imperialistic. He admitted that Imperialism oontravented self-determi-nation in backward peoples, but it was essential to spread trade, law, peace, and order, therefore Imperialism was the greatest power in the world today.
Referring to America’s stakes in the development of Cuba, and the Philippines., he remarked: “More power to you! Yon are on. the only road which will make the world a better place. 1 believe American Imperialism is only on the threshhold .of (its responsibilities j they must and will increase. I do not know holv economic rivalry is to be prevented from embroiling civilised nations. There is only one safeguard against that danger, and its name ia Imperialism."
