The Dublin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph states ihe arrest ot tie Valera ha s led to the revival of interest in the elections, resulting in increased support for pro-treaty candidates, while anti-treaty speakers are meeting with hostile receptions. Mr Cosgrave (Premier) when speaking at Navan, was heckled. Considerable feeling developed and revolvers were drawn, but trouble was averted.
REPUBLICAN APPEAL. NEUTRALITY OF VATICAN. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Rome, August 19. It is stated that tho Irish Republicans have appealed to the Pope on behalf of Do Valera. Cardinal Gasparri replied that the Vatican as powerless to intervene officially, but the Pope was anxious for a speedy re-establishment of peace in Ireland, and hopes Do Valera will reeeivo an impartial trial.
