OBITUARY

Mrß J. W. Henwood, ' .for many years a resident of the Ingle-wood district, died in New Plymouth on Friday morning.

, The death took place suddenly at Hamilton on Thursday last of Mrs Matilda Eleanor'Wilson, relect of Peter Wilson, who; for some years had a farm on tbe Pembroke Road and died a few years ago. The deceased, who was one of the first settlers in Stratford, was of a kindly disposition and well known throughout the district. She is survived by a married daughter, formerly a teacher at the Stratford Primary School and Miss C. Wilson of Hamilton, and. two sons, Albert (Rotorua) and Arnold (Wellington). One son (Leslie) was killed at jfallipoli. The interment takes place at the Kopuatama Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon.

The funeral of the late Mr Robert Divehali took place at the Te Henui cemetery on Thursday. The late Mr Divehali was born in Kent, England, on September 24, 1829, and came to New Zealand with his wife and family in the sailing Howerah. He arrived in New Plymouth on December 4, 1874, and started the construction of the railway from New Plymouth to Waitara. He remained in the New Zealand Government's service for 28 years and then retired on superannuation. Mr Divehali was a resident of Stratford for 40 years and,ln recent years he lived in New Plymouth. Mr Divehali leaves a widow and seven daughters (Mrs H. Walsh, of Kaponga, Mrs H. Jones and Mrs D. McWhirter, of Stratford, Mrs F. Wilmshurst, Mrs j. A. Revel, Mrs R.' Edwards and Mrs A. H. Fever, of New Plymouth). There are 55 grandchildren and 34 great Grand-child-ren. Ten grandsons served in the Great War and three were killed.>

There passed away in Wellington on the 14th inst, at the ripe age of 77 years another of Hawera's oldest settlers in the person of Mrs D. Balneaves. She arrived, in Wellington from Edinburgh by, the sailing ship "Horsa" in 1876, and was ried in that city, shortly- afterwards coming on to Wanganui by boat, and taking the long coach journey to Hawera. Witl? the exception of some couple of years up north, has' resided there ever since. The deceased lady (states the Star) some months ago had the misfortune through, a fall to fracture a bone in her leg, and on partly recovering had a second fall, puling her shoulder out. Her great spirit, however, enabled her, to make a miraculous recovery from this, and she ventured to Wellington, with a v'ew' of getting near the sea. The. severe winter, however, told the tale. She

is survived "by a husband, two dau- ' ghters—Mrs Hudson (Hawera), Mrs Flavin (Awatuna), and one son, Mr F.'Bajneaves (Wellington).

The death, of Mr E. Cave, who was well-known as a bridge contractor, occurred at a private hospital in Hawera yesterday, after an illness of some weeks. Mr Cave was responsible for the building of the fine concrete bridges in the Waimate West County, and his work was the subject of very favourable comment by the Hon. J. G. Coated during the Minister's recent tour of Taranaki. The late Mr Cave was 65 years of age. He was born at .lohnsonville, formerly known as Blackpoint, and lived in the Wairarapa district until some 40 years ago, when he removed to Taranaki. His last twenty years was spent at Elthara. He is survived by his widow, also two brothers—viz., Mr Matthew Cave, of Hamilton, and Mr Fred Cave, of Wanganui; Mrs Higginson, of Thames, being a sister. There are also four sons and four daughters, namely, Mr Everett Cave, Mahoe; Mr William Cave, Makahu; Frederick and James Cave, Eltham; Misses Elizabeth and Kate Gave, Mahoe; Mrs J. Fowler, Manurewa; and Mrs P. Hogan, Mahoe.
