ENORMOUS LAND SLIP
EAST CAPE ISLAND CLIFFS. RESULT OF EROSION. Per Press Assiciation. Wellington, August 10. The steamer Cosmos reports that on the way down from Auckland it was noticed that an en-rmous landslip had occurred on tho seaward face of East Cape Island estimated at at least 100,000 tons. The cliffs had collapsed into the sea, which was discoloured for miles around, and was as thick as pea soup. The island has long been looked on as doomed owing to erosion, and some time ago tho lighthouse was removed to the mainland.
