PETROL PRICE WAR

GREAT DROP IN THE STATES. PUBLIC INVESTIGATION. Press Association —Copyright. A-o tralian ap 1 N.Z. Cable Associati*'—. (Received 9.50 a.m.) New York, August 14. Throughout ten Middle and Western States, petrol is selling at sixteen cents per gallon as the result of a cut-rate war among the producers. The situation arose from the action of the Governors of several , States, who ordered the price to be reasonably lowered from twenty-three cents, otherwise the State would establish its own patrol stations. The Standard Oil Company immediately reduced the rates far below those that independent companies can afford to sell at yet, which they must do to meet farmers' prices. Pursuant to numerous requests from the Governors of Western States the Department of Justice has ordered a nation-wide investigation into the price-war among the petrol producers.
