A lecture on a Maori subject is to be given at the Egmont Club on Monday evening next by the Hon. A. T. Ngata. The lecture will be open to members and their wives and lady friends. The annual meeting of the Cardiff Dafry Co. is being held on August 27th. Nominations for three seats on the directorate close on Saturday with the secretary, Mr T. IT. Penn. A man named Arthur Reginald Borland, who is also known by several aliases, has been arrested by the police at Wanganui on several charges of false pretences, alleged to have been committed at Otaki, Fielding, Marton, Stratford and Inglewood.

At the monthly meeting of the Stratford Fire Brigade, it, was decided to hold a fancy dress ball this year on 13th September, with a children's fancy dress ball on the following night. Trophies have been promised for the best dresses as follows: Best paper dress made from fancy paper, cheapest manufactured dress, most elaborate fancy dress, and most original dress. At a meeing of settlers in the Pohokura and Wiiangamomona districts, the question of approaching the Government to reduce the rents oi the Crown tenants and adjust the Advances to Settlers' mortgages was discussed. The fact was stresed that the slump had seriously affected that class of hilly country, being worse than any other district, because during the war period when high prices were being received by most farmers, settlers in the districts mentioned derived very little benefit, as they were not able to fatten cattle, and had to keep stock at a loss.

A party of twenty-six leave Wanganui to-day for Mt. Ruapehu to participate in the winter sports. The mountain slopes are reported to be in excellent condition for ski-log, and if the weather holds good a most enjoyable time should be spent.
