The Australians began their match in the Davis Cup preliminary against .he Japanese to-day. This made the latter nervous before' the start.

In the first set, Shimidzu's service appeared soft, but it had deceptive qualities about it. Later he recovered his pace, and with unexpected hard drives caught Hawkes unawares. The heat was terrific and he Australian seemed to suffer from it, finally lossing the- set.

In the next set, Hawkes steadied -lown, and outplayed the .Japanese in every department. He went for accuracy in place of speed, a.nd despite his opponent's doggedness won comfortably.

The third set was also taken by the Australian, whose ground strokes wore very good, though his senr'oo lacked the speed and twist that made it so effective against the [Tnwaiians. So far, there was nothing spectacular in the which ■vns deficient in serve and speed, but Hnwkes stole a march on Shimidzu, who apparently expected him to "-ear himself out, as he did in 1921. Hawkes had learned his lesson well. WIN FOR ANDERSON. Press Asso iation—Copyright. Aus fxalian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received 12.45 p.m.) Chicago, August 9.
