Sporting critics consider that the Victorian Derby was a muddling affair and nothing like the test for the Blue Ribbon it is intended to be. Finmark was beaten because the race resloved itself into a five furlong sprint preceded by a canter. Finmark's connections arc blamed for scratching the pacemaker, Kilowen, which cost Finmark the race. Although Magpie was not all out in defeating Desert Gold by a neck, writers applaud 'the mare's gameness after setting a terrific pace.
