INFLUENZA ON TRANSPORT.

SIX OF CREW SUCCUMB.

Per Press Association. Dunedin, September IS. fn addition to the deaths oil the troopship announced by the Defence authorities, six of the ship's crew succumbed to the malady. Their names were :-*- C. Temiant, fourth engineer, Timaru. I). Fisher, assistant carpenter, Wellington. , I). Carmichael, A.R., Dunedin. P. J. Inglis, trimmer, Victoria. Henry Philips, ship's baker, Christchurch. ,1. Harden, trimmer, Liverpool: STATEMENT BY MINISTER. Wellington,- September 18 The Acting-Premier stated to-day that telegrams had been received inquiring whether the next-of-kin of those members of the Fortieth Beinforcements reported dead from sickness had been advised before the names were given to the press. All the next-of-kin were advised 24 hours before publication. The names of the sick had not been sent, because

the reports in these eases had noi» yet been received. The question had also been raised as to measures that might be taken to protect subsequent reinforcements by the same route as the Forties traversed. Sir James Allen remarked that an inquiry as to the origin of the trouble was begun immediately the newg was received with a view to taking any action which might help to safeguard the troops in the future. He thought little could be done with the ships, but it might be desirable to prevent later drafts from going ashore at certain ports where there might be a risk of dangeroits infection, but the Department would await reports before taking any action.

The Forty-first Reinforcements, who went by the same route, were reported "health good" at a port of call on September 11, and similar reports were received from ports of call in regard to the Forty-seconds (September 6) and Forty-thirds ('August 31). LONG SERVICE MEN. Press Association. Wellington, September 18. Regarding leave for the Main Body men. Sir James Allen says leave will be duty furlough to men of at least three years' service with good conduct. Arrangements for furlough will be made at the front. The men released will have 28 days' leave on full pay in New Zealand, with free railway pass for three weeks, after which they will be re-embarked if fit for service, unless the Military Service Board orders otherwise in cases submitted for consideration. The number to he granted leave is limited to 50 per month, by reason of the shipping difficulty. It will be possible for the Military Service Board to grant leave, for men on active service for reasons of urgent business. He understood such cases would he included in the estimate of 50.
