156 LIVES LOST AT SEA. and N.Z. Cable Assn, and Reuter. Press Association—(Jopyngiit. Now York, February 24. The steamer Florizel, bound from Halifax to New York, ran ashore in a snowstorm. The heavy sea prevented the resellers approaching and the vessel us quickly pounded to pieces. It I is believed that 156 lives were lost. FORTY SURVIVORS LANDED. St. Johns, Newfoundland, Feb 25. (Received 9.15 a.m.) The Red Cross liner Florizel was bound "for Halifax. She struck the rocks north of Cape Race in a blinding snowstorm. The, ship carried seventyseven passengers and sixty-nine of a crew, including a number of officers and soldiers. Dories and lifeboats , rescued twenty-six after they had spent the night on the wreck. A number of bodies have been washed ashore apparently from the. wrecked boats. Other rescues bring the total saved so far to 40. HUDDART PARKER'S. Sydney, February 25. Despite the statement by the managing director of Huddart, Parker's Shipping Company, that he knew nothing regarding the persistent rumors of the proposed amalgamation of his company with the Howard Smith's, and possibly the Adelaide Steamship Company, there is a keen demand, including New Zealand orders, in both Sydney and Melbourne for these companies shares at enhanced rates.

UNION SECRETARY'S DEATH.

Melbourne, February 25

Thomas Davies, the secretary of tht Ironworkers' Union, together with his wife and three-year-old daughter, were found shot dead at his home at Boxhill. It is stated that, Davies had lately been financially worried.

FAMILY WIPED OUT.

Davies and his daughter died of gunshot wounds and his wife died of poison.

The police believe that Davies shot his daughter and himself and that his wife took poison. Davies was lately under suspension from the ironworkers' secretaryship. It is thought that worry caused the tragedy. His wife recently wrote to a friend: "My dear old sweetheart is accused of doing things of which he lias no recollection. They will show him no mercy."
