FEILDING ASSAULTS.

TWO MEN ARRESTED.

REMANDED TILL NEXT WEEK.

A development in the Howard Elliott assault case of last week took place last Wednesday morning, when two men who had been arrested by the police at 7 o’clock on the previous evening were placed in dock.

I Rupert McKee, employed at the local freezing works, a young* man qf 19 years, recently come from the Petone district, was charged with assaulting Edwin Leslie Wain, Salvation Army officer, on the night of the 13th inst.

I Sergeant Cahill explained the circumstances of the alleged assault, and 'asked for a remind till next Wednesday. He asked that substantial bail be fixed.

Mr Ongley, said he had been asked by Mr Cooper, who was appearing for the accused, to apply for a reasonable bail.

i The remand was granted, bail being fixed at £SO, with one surety of £SO.

i Michael Rowan, a married man aged 32 years, also employed at the freezing works, was charged with assaulting George Frederic Stockwell, Methodist minister, causing him actual bodily harm.

i Sergeant Cahill pointed out that this charge \vas a more serious one than the previous case.

i The Justices granted a remand till next Wednesday, bail being forthcoming in each case.

i In connection with the violent attack made on the Rev. Messrs Stock-

well and Miller at Feilding, it appears that a man 'called' at'the residence of Mr R. Burne just before it occurred and asked to see the Rev, Howard Elliott. Mrs Burne replied that Mr Elliott was still at the meeting. It had been arranged that Mr Elliott should say with Mr Burne that night,

hut in view of the visit of the man, suspicion was aroused and it, was considered prudent for him to ttay elsewhere. That niglit a stone was thrown through one of Mr Burne’s windows and two other stones struck the front door.

FIVE SUMMONSES ISSUED. Per. Press Association. Feilding, February 23. Five summonses have been issued against men for disturbing the Rev. Elliott’s meeting. A citizens’ meeting here protested against mob law.
