DEFENCE NOTES.

Replying to a question in the House the other day, the Minister of Defence said instructions were issued two years ago that the worthless effects of dead soldiers should not be sout back to parents. Watches and trinkets were to be returned, but useless clothes were to be burned. He regretted if, in any case, this instruction had not been observed. A special note on the subject of saluting appears in Tronthain camp orders, “Non-commissioned officers and men whilst on pass or on leave from camp,” it is stated, “will be returned to camp at once, and have their pass or leave cancelled for the following offences: —(a) Failing to salute officers, (b) wearing civilian greatcoats, (c) being dirty and slovenly.”
