The vowels of the English alphabet. “a e i o u,” constitute a popular catch-phrase in Austria. They stand for the national motto, “Austria est imperare orbi universi”—■ “Austrians to rule all the world.” The phrase was introduced in the reign of the weak and unfortunate Emperor Frederick 111., in 14401493, and it has been frequently quoted by the optimists. Possibly by the time the Allies have finished with Austria those first two initials will be missing, and the motto will be amended to “1.0. U,”

A most successful social and sale of work was held at the Bird Road School on Wednesday afternoon and evening by the teachers and children. A splendid display of fancy and useful articles was offered for sale, most of them being disposed of at good prices. The sum raised by the sale and subscriptions amounted to £24 17s id which will be forwarded direct to Chaplain-Major Greene to be used in his work amongst the wounded soldiers. The greater part of the articles sold was the work of the school children and the boys have proved that the aft of needlework is not confined to the female sex, as they have shown themselves as expert with the needle as the girls of the school. At the close of the proceedings, Mr Phillips presented Miss Berry, headteacher, with a beautiful suppercloth, the work of one of the older girls, on behalf of the children of the school. The cakes were won by Mr (!. Old and a doll by Mrs Howard. of the Vicarage, Stratford. The teachers and committee wish to express their thanks to all those who so generously helped with subscriptions and goods.—(Correspondent.)

Lamason’s mart at the present time resembles a small poultry farm. Geese, clucks, fowls, etc., are mairng Broadway hideous with their squawking, The public should abate the nuisance by removing the offenders.
