LORD BURGHLEY RESIGNS
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 9. The King has accepted the resignation of Lord Burghley as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda.
Then, when convinced, said: “I do not want anything to do with it. I am leaving this world.” Von Ribbentrop commented:. “Good heavens, this means a revolution of everything. No one would be so stupid as to start a war now.” Keitel said the efforts of German scientists never got far beyond the theory stage. Hitler had not mentioned the bomb to him.
“It opens up an, as yet, unsurveyable era in aerial technique and' tactics,” said Kesselring. “The effect' of one bomb is tantamount to wiping out an entire target area, either above or below land or water. I foresee in this new development a revolution in water mines. Imagine a detonation 20,000 times as great as just one mine. As to effective counter-measures, who knows. Improved, faster and more manoeuvrable night fighters might be of some use/maybe new electrical interference devices can be worked out; but the revolution is here.”
