WELFARE WORK IN PACIFIC AREAS

Some details of the patriotic welfare work which is being done for the benefit of New Zealand servicemen in the Pacific area are given in the latest Bulletin of the National Patriotic Furid Board. A report received from the board s commissioner with No. 1 Island Group, R.N.Z.A.F., covers the establishment of rest camps, recreation huts and snack bars for operational and transit personnel, the newspaper, motion picture, quarterly gift parcel, buffet and icecream services and also the distribution of sports gear. These are some of the activities being carried out in the area by the board’s representatives, who include Y.M.C.A. secretaries. In the opinion of the board’s commissioner the work of these secretaries has played a large part in assisting the Air Force to obtain the esprit de corps prevailing today. When the report was written there were 13 motion picture theatres in the area. There is an ice-cream plant at Camp Tui, a rest centre established at Guadalcanar, and this plant also supplies ice-cream to some of the stations in the forward areas. The ice-cream is flown north twice a week for free distribution in the messes. About 200 gallons of ice-cream a month are being distributed in this way. Radios have been provided for the huts occupied by the operational squadrons in the forward areas and a regular supply of toilet requisites, sports equipment, chewing gum, cordials and gift parcels is given. A comprehensive report has also been received by the board covering welfare activities for New Zealand servicemen in Fiji where the board is also represented by a commissioner. The amenities available in Fiji include the New Zealand Club built by the board, the Catholic Services ' Club, and Garrick House, which reports show is a very popular leave centre. It is situated in the best part of Suva. There is a Kiwi dance band for service dances and social functions. A yacht has been provided, and also sports equipment, and another popular service is the distribution of New Zealand papers throughout the island.
