TWO TOURNAMENTS ON SATURDAY Two tournaments were played at the Duke street courts on Saturday to mark the 25th anniversary of the New Zealand Basketball Association. The annual primary schools’ tournament was played in the morning and in the afternoon the Southland Basketball Union conducted a two-life tournament. The weather througout the day was cold and changeable, but was quite pleasant at times. Rain fell occasionally and there was a cold south-westerly wind.

The Southland Basketball Union’s knock-out tournament was conducted on the two-life handicap system. It was divided into two divisions—the first for first and second grade teams and the second for third and fourth grade teams. Each game comprised two five-minute spells. The standard of play was high, especially in the finals and semi-finals. Fifty-two teams competed, including several from country centres. The first division was won by Stuarts 2A and the second by Intermediate. The results of the section finals were as follows (handicaps being given in parentheses):— First Division.—Section A: Collegiate (0) 8, Makarewa (1) 5. Section B: Bluff (5) 10, Pirates Seconds (6) 8. Final: Intermediate (5) 9, St. Mary’s (0) 7. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TOURNAREENT The primary schools’ tournament, attracted 43 entries from the city and many parts of the province. It was played in three grades. The A grade championship was won by Intermediate and the runners-up were Makarewa, who were the winners last year. Twenty-one teams took part in the B grade, which was played in four sections. The section winners were Bluff B, Mataura, St. Thomas’s (Winton) and Winton District High School. In the semi-finals Mataura beat Bluff B and St. Thomas’s beat Winton. The result of the final was St. Thomas’s 5, Mataura 3. . There were 16 teams in the C grade, which was also divided into four sections. The section winners were St. George Red, South A, Gore 'aiid Makarewa. St. George Red defeated South A and Gore defeated Makarewa in the semi-finals. The final resulted as follows: St. George Red 2, Gore 1. REFEREES SELECTED FOR N.Z. TOURNAMENT The following Southland referees have been chosen by the New Zealand Referees’ Association to act at the New Zealand basketball tournament at Christchurch next month:—Misses D. Crumpton, M. Shand, D. Swift and M. Pollok and Mr C. Haberfield.
