PINK CLOVER’S FIRST . WIN

Impressive Performance By Royal Flight

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. The race track at Washdyke was holding for the combined hunts’ meeting while the outside was badly cut up, the result of many horses galloping on it lately after the fall of snow.

Lord Broiefort was not prominent early in the Hadlow Hurdles. He moved up from the half-mile post, headed Bali and Court Dress at the entrance to the straight and won decisively. Test Pilot came along later, finishing strongly for second. It was his best performance in a race. Lord Broiefort, now owned by Mr H. Elworthy, was making his first appearance as a jumper and may do better.

Peter Gazelle, starting from the rails, began smartly and had an all-the-way win in the Levels Hack Handicap. Dash o’ Dink made a good run in the straight to get second, and Plutocrat carne on late to beat Prince Leighon for third. Smile Again lost her rider soon after the start.

Gayfort joined Filibeg in the lead starting the last round in the Teschemaker Hunt Cup. For the rest of the way they provided all the interest, but Gayfort drew out in the last half-mile and won comfortably. These two both jumped well. A hundred yards back True Range just failed to overhaul Islay Downs for third. Cobalt, Valcron, Red Leader and Royal Don fell and Whiphand was pulled up six furlongs from home after a very poor exhibition of jumping. Sir Raymond waited on the leaders to the straight in the Washdyke Trot and then went on to win easily. PINK CLOVER’S EASY WIN Pink Clover streaked to the front at the start of the South Canterbury Steeplechase and gradually opened up a gap of 100 yards. Nothing got near him and he won easing up by 20 lengths. He had not done much racing and this was his first success, though he was third in an open race at Wingatui in June. Albino seemed to be going well with Abbey Lu and Noko with seven furlongs to go, when Albino fell. The other pair went on together till Abbey Lu fell at the last fence. Then Steward moved up and beat Noko for second. Steward had been prominent early, but had lost his place. Valcron completed the course for a poor fourth. The Southland mare, Royal Flight, drew strong attention to her Winter Cup chance with her easy win in the Claremont Handicap. High Ideal soon took charge from Lord Advocate, High Play, Gulf Stream, Royal Flight, Ganges. and Sphere, but after two furlongs Gulf Stream joined High Ideal in the lead. High Ideal weakened when they reached the straight, where Royal Flight, Lord Advocate and Ganges moved up. Royal Flight quickly drew clear with the race in safe keeping, going on to an impressive performance. Ganges soon had the measure of Gulf Stream, who was cut out of third money when Alpine came on the scene with a strong finishing run. Platform, Salary, Sphere, Sir Saladin and First In were next. Ganges carried some undeclared overweight and his backers got a fright when it was announced that the horse had been disqualified, but this was corrected later as the demount involved was less than the 21b allowed him under the rules. In the Pareora Hunters’ Plate the pacemakers, Receptive and Minority, were followed all the way to the straight by Royoney, Tenorman and Patu-Ra, who then had the race to themselves. Prince Dolomite was fourth after beginning slowly. Boloyna faded out in the last half-mile and Patu-Ra pulled up lame. . Great Divide, who was near the front ail the way in the Pentlow Hack Handicap, led to the straight, but Weld Cona wore him down to win decisively. Eagle Flight and Sir Tague, both of whom were slow away, finished fast to head the others. Silver Sai failed to run on. LEADING AUSTRALIAN JOCKEYS (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) . SYDNEY, July 29. J. Thompson, with 34 winners and a deadbeat, won the Sydney jockeys’ premiership for 1944-45. W. Cook, with 32 winners and two dead-heats, was second. Thompson nas now won the premiership three times in the last five years. A. Breasley, with 53 winners and two dead-heats, had a runaway win in the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership. Lough Neath, Queensland’s most colourful galloper, died from natural ca uses m a northern New South Wales paddock. He was retired from racing eight years ago. During his career he won £19,871 in stake money.
