FISH AND GAME IN OTAGO
CHANGE IN CONTROL OPPOSED (Special) DUNEDIN, May 10. The council of the Otago Acclimatization Society last week decided to lodge a protest with the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) against the proposed taking over of certain of the society’s district for inclusion in the Government-controlled Lakes acclimatization district. The secretary of the Otago Society (Mr L. Miller) has prepared a comprehensive report setting out the council’s case in its determination not to relinquish control of any of its territory, and this was presented to a special meeting of the council on Tuesday night. It was decided that the report be incorporated in the annual report of the society, and that in addition it be sent to all those interested in the work of the society, and to the Government. There was some discussion whether the Government would take action by means of an Order in Council or an Act of Parliament, the secretary stating that effect could be given to the proposal through an Order in Council. The opinion was expressed by Mi - S. F. Aburn that the Government did not desire to deal publicly with contentious business, and it would like to dispose of the matter with the minimum of opposition. Mr C. M. Greenslade said the society had a “jolly good case,” and all that was necessary in the meantime was the forwarding of the secretary’s report. If this initial move did not have the desired effect the society could “bring all its guns to bear.” Mr S. H. Barnes said he felt that he was voicing the opinion of the majority of members of the society when he stated that there was no need for the Government to take over the greater part of the society’s territory when an offer had been made by the society to surrender control of the Lake Hawea district.
