Sporting ESPADRILLE AN IMPROVER

Southlanders For Trentham By HAMPTON ‘ Handicaps for the Forbury Park Pat-riotic-meeting are due on Wednesday. Inscription The Paper Money-Endorse four-year-old, Inscription, has been retired from racing and will probably be used at Timpany brothers’ stud at Woodlands next season. Well Ridden Inscrutable owed his win in the Waihopai Handicap at Invercargill partly to an opening seized by W. F. Ellis at the entrance to the straight. The jockey’s effort was reminiscent of some of his feats when he was on top of the world a couple of years ago, comments The Timaru Herald. First Return Sascha’s half share in the Waikouaiti Cup was her first success for Mr G. J. Barton, who paid £6OO for her after she had won three, races (including the Wyndham Cup) and run second in the D.J.C. Handicap in four starts last summer. J. Mitchell did not have to wait so long to get a return for another Dunedin patron, Mr P. Delassisi. Boulder Dam is a comparatively recent addition to the Studholme stable. Will Do Better Espadrille was caught in the ruck at Wyndham, and did not appear until it was too late to overhaul Runaway. At Invercargill she began well and put a break on the field. Perhaps a little too much use was made of her and she could not respond when Lisheen . revealed unexpected stamina. Espadrille’s two seconds were encouraging and she should not long remain in the maiden class.

Doing Well Li. J. Ellis has done well with Golden Souvenir. The long-striding colt suffered a narrow defeat in the New Zealand Derby, and was undoubtedly unlucky. In his next race he won the valuable Dunedin Cup and at Waikouaiti held off the fast-finishing Sascha to divide the honours in the Waikouaiti Cup. In all, the colt has had one win, a dead-heat, and two second placings (one at Trentham after Ellis took him over), and has won £1537 in stakes under Ellis’s charge. He has been ridden by his trainer on each occasion. Nominated For Wellington Fair Trial is the only Southlander nominated for the Wellington Cup. The Solicitor-General gelding is to race at Wingatui today, where his form will be closely followed in view of his Trentham engagement. Fair Trial has had an interrupted preparation this season, but his form in the Invercargill Cup suggested that he was nearing his best. Bonny Flight and Sing Sing have both been entered for the Telegraph Handicap. Bonny Flight is capable of holding her own against the best sprinters in the country and she should also hold Sing Sing safely, although the lastnamed will not be disgraced at Trentham.

High-weight Conditions Royoney was ridden in the Comaga High-weight Handicap at Waikouaiti by L. J. Ellis, who carried a penalty of 71b. Ellis was allowed to be substituted, as a qualified hurdle rider was not available. There was one on the ground, but he could not be found when a call was made. Royoney met some trouble in the race,' and finished fourth. . He was saddled up again three races later and, with the same rider, was defeated on the post by Baffling. The success of the latter came as a surprise, as he had six unplaced performances this season. He is a three-year-old by Baffles from Taupiri by Hunting Song from Flying Foam by Feramorz from Flagship by Monoform, and is trained at Riccarton by C. G. Humphries for his Wellington owner, Mr G. A. Lang. Related To Padlock

Native Scott is closely related to Padlock, which started favourite in the strong field for the 1928 New Zealand Trotting Cup. Padlock did not win, but he was one of the greatest pacers of his time. The season after his Cup failure he returned to Addington for the Metropolitan August meeting and won a race on each of the three days of the spring carnival. On the first day he won the 2min 13sec class mile International Handicap. On the second day, from 36 yards in the principal twomile event, the King George Handicap, he beat a field of Cup horses. This paved the way for success in the 4min 27sec class National Handicap, in which Quality, King Pointer, Daphne de Oro, and Terence Dillon were among those which finished behind him. Padlock, always an unsound horse, capped a grand career by beating Peter Bingen easily in the 1929 Free-for-All. Peter Bingen had won his second New Zealand Cup a few days beforehand. Great Northern Derby There was an exciting finish among the first five horses in the Great Northern Derby, Coronaire winning by a head from Colais, with Hormuz and Pensacola another half-length away, a dead-heat for third, says The Dominion correspondent. The favourite, Artificer, was right up fifth, and was followed by Bridge Acre, Gay Chat, Master Ted, and Ramicourt. Pensacola went to the front quickly and was joined after three furlongs by Master Ted. Together they carried on the running till Master Ted began to lose ground at the three furlongs, where Coronaire, Bridge Acre, and Artificer were together behind them, and Colais was next. Pensacola held on gamely after leading into the straight, but the task of winning from end to end was just beyond him, Coronaire and Colais both outstaying him in the last furlong. Colais made a very determined effort at the distance, but weakened slightly in the last stride or two. Hormuz finished solidly. Artificer did not have the best of the running in the straight, otherwise he may have been closer. Coronaire was well ridden by T. Green, who moved him up past several horses when the pace was slack in the middle stages, and then waited behind Pensacola to make his effort, which he timed to a nicety. The first and second horses are both by imported Coronach. A Great Innings Foxbridge, who is again easily at the head of the winning sires’ list this season, had an exceptional run of success on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, his stock winning the last six races in a row. The list was made up of the Great Northern Foal Stakes (Al-Sirat), Auckland Cup (Foxwyn), Queen’s Plate (Hormuz), Railway Handicap (Neenah), Nursery Handicap (White Blaze), and Christmas Handicap (Exeter). The record was further inproved when Competitor won the D.J.C. Champagne Stakes on the same day, and Our Joy took the Tikorangi Hack Handicap at the Taranaki meeting. Winners by Foxbridge on New Year’s Day were Alcyone (Wairarapa), Bridgehead (Waikouaiti) and Foxbun (Stratford). KING NOMINATES THREE HORSES FOR DERBY (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4.
