FREEZING WORKS IN SOUTHLAND
SERIOUS SHORTAGE OF LABOUR The urgent need for freezing workers was emphasized by the general manager of the Southland Frozen Meat Company (Mr A. Derbie) at a sitting of the Industrial Manpower Appeal Committee yesterday. “There is a serious shortage of men for all departments of the freezing works and it looks as if we are going to be up against it,” he said. “The works will be going full force from the opening date, January 4.” The shearing season was behind schedule and this would mean that many freezing workers who were usually employed as shearers until the freezing works opened would be late in beginning at the works. There was going to be a definite shortage of butchers at the Ocean beach freezing works this season, stated Mr N. W. McGorlick, works manager. He did not know how many butchers would be available, but there was certainly going to be a shortage. It was .anticipated that the lamb season ■\ A uld be just as good as the previous one.
