Baron Keyes of Zeebrugge and Dover, the former Admiral of the Fleet Sir Roger Keyes, will arrive in Auckland by air from Australia on Tuesday next. After a civic reception he will leave on Wednesday afternoon for Wellington, where he will be the guest of the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall. His visit is expected to last until the end of January. (P.A.) Mr B. E. H. Whitcombe, managing director of Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., who has been visiting Invercargill, will return north by the express this morning.

Mr S. V. Raines, who has been holding sittings in Invercargill as No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority, left on his return to Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

The town clerk, Mr W. F. Stunnan, leaves today for New Plymouth, where he will spend his annual leave. Mr W. Grieve, honorary treasurer of the Invercargill Trotting Club, has been elected a life member of the club in recognition of his services as honorary judge for the last 12 years.

Former Home Guardsmen assembled last evening to say gpodbye to Mr J. A. Mclver, who is leaving Invercargill after his retirement from the Lands and Survey Department. Mr Mclver was a member of No. 8 Platoon, B Company, Invercargill Battalion. He was also actively associated with the company’s social committee. Mr R. V. Macaulay paid a special tribute to Mr Mclver’s work for the annual reunions, and spoke appreciatively of his service with the Home Guard. Mr A. H. J. Wyatt spoke on behalf of the Social Committee, and Mr Macaulay then made a presentation. Mr Mclver replied. Captain P. M. Church, of Wellington, has arrived at Bluff, where he will take up the position of master of the Harbour Board’s tug, Awarua. It is announced that Dr B. W. Doak, acting Director of Plant Chemistry in the laboratory at Palmerston North, has been elected a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry. Dr Doak for some years has been director of the laboratory, but recently he has been more concerned with an investigation relating to the chemical aspects of the dehydration of fruits and vegetables. He is at present engaged in the preliminary arrangement of the 1945 conference of the Institute of Chemistry, which will be held in Palmerston North towards the end of August -(P.A.) A welcome to Mr G. R. Herron, M.P., was extended by the chairman (Mr G. Stevenson) at a meeting of the Southland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday. Mr F. Forbes, a leading solo comet player, was the guest of honour at a social function conducted by the Invercargill Civic Band. In making a presentation, the president, Mr W. J. Thomas, said that it would have been practically impossible for the band to carry out its engagements without the services of Mr Forbes, as he was a key man. The conductor, Mr A. R. Wills, and several bandsmen also paid tributes to Mr Forbes’s playing ability and services.
