GOOD JUMPING AT SHOW

SOUTH ISLAND TITLE TO TE ANAU The jumping competitions, always a feature of people’s day at the show, were productive of a high standard or jumping and the big crowd which filled the stand and lined the ring weie entertained to much excellent, sport. The South Island championship was won by Mr G. D. Wilson’s Te Anau, a horse whose evenness was more attractive than any other point of his performance. In the Best Jumper (lady riders) event, run off before the championship Te Anau was just shaded by. Mr R. A. Dodd’s Paddy. Both of these horses come from the Knapdale district. They took the honours of the two principal events on the programme and in addition Paddy gained second prize in the Best Jumper (11 stone) class. Nineteen jumpers contested the championship. Two rounds of eight fences provided a good test, and with few exceptions the course was completed without mishap. Te Anau gave a very even exhibition, and scored 76 points out of a total 80. Paddy scored 75 points and Lady Barkley (third) scored 74 points. Others who put up good performances included Quiver, a winner at last year’s show, Black Bess and Sparkling Lad. Mr C. L. Orbell, the judge, said that the jumping all round was of a good standard. Following are the results:— MAIDEN JUMP (22 entries.) T. W. Glynn’s (Blackmount) Firefly 1 W. Hazlett’s Peter 2 Miss E. Carter’s (Mandeville) Pilot 3 The winner took Mrs A. Oliver’s (Pine Bush) trophy, won for the first time last year by W. A. Cundall. BEST JUMPER (11 stone or over). D. F. O’Donnell’s (Dunedin) Viking 1 R. A. Dodds’s (Knapdale) Paddy 2 Miss J. Home’s (Mataura) Sparkling Lad 3 There were 29 entries in this event and much excellent jumping was seen.
