SHOP ASSISTANTS’ HOURS

BILL TO BE REDRAFTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 13. Replying to Mr Hackett (Lab., Grey Lynn), who asked in the House of Representatives today whether it was proposed to bring down legislation to deal with the closing of shops and to give shop assistants the benefit of the five-day week, the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, said it was his intention to bring down the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill this session, but that had not been possible owing to the pressure of business. Mr Webb added that it would be remembered that he had brought down a measure in 1941 to restore to the Arbitration Court its powers to fix closing hours, but because of the war situation and objections from certain quarters the measure was not proceeded with. He now proposed to have the Bill redrafted and circulated to the organizations concerned before introducing it next session.
