POSTAL VOTING ISSUE
A.A. BALLOT CLOSES TODAY The voting papers in the postal ballot which the Automobile Association (Southland) is conducting among its members to decide whether the general committee of the association should be elected by postal voting must be delivered to the office of the association by noon today. Over 4000 voting papers were sent out and by noon yesterday about 850 had been returned. As soon as voting papers are received they are placed in a locked box in the office. The counting of the votes will be done by the secretary and the auditor of the association, with the assistance of whatever staff they require. The counting is expected to take two or three days and the result will probably not be known until early next week. It is not just a matter of counting. A check will also be necessary. Members are required to write the number of their current membership cards on the voting papers, and these numbers will be checked by the office records.
If the result is in favour of postal voting, a general meeting of members of the association will have to be held before the necessary alterations to the rules can be made. There would, however, be no immediate need to hold such a meeting because the next election of the committee will not take place before next August.
