OTAUTAU SPORTS MEETING

SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE A high standard of performance was shown in most events at the twentysecond annual sports meeting of the Otautau Athletic Society, at Holt Park yesterday. The weather was beautifully fine and visitors took advantage of the natural grandstand to find good positions from which to view the sports. The tracks, though heavy, were in excellent order. The attendance was very good considering that no special trains were run and approximately £lB5 was taken at the gate. In the running events close finishes were seen in all races. M. K. Bulling had a successful day, winning the 440 Yards Open Handicap and the 880 Yards Open Handicap, and being placed second in the 220 Yards Open Handicap and third, equal, in the 75 Yards Open Handicap. The cyclists played a big part in the meeting, 12 races being contested. R. McDougall, who won the Mile Open Handicap, was the outstanding rider. The winner of the One Mile and ahalf Handicap was L. Johnston. He has been riding since 1928 and is the oldest member of the Invercargill Cycling Club. Members of the club wore black armlets in memory of a clubmate Trooper T. E. Waddick, who died of wounds in Italy recently. The chopping events created considerable interest and competition was keen. The main event, the 12-inch Underhand Open Chop, was won by R. Hogg. The sawing competitions attracted considerable attention from the public. During the afternoon the president of the society (Mr C. G. C. Sinclair) and the Minister of War Expenditure, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, the club’s patron, addressed the crowd over the loudspeaker system. Children’s events were held during the afternoon and attracted big fields.
