SAL’S PAL WINS AT GORE

Sing Sing’s Return To Form TOTALIZATOR HANDLES £40,800 The presence of several New Zealand Cup candidates in the fields attracted a big crowd of racegoers to the Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting yesterday. The racing was held in good weather, but a strong southerly wind made conditions unpleasant for investors. The course was in good order, though not fast. The financial returns give a good indication of the size of the crowd. The totalizator turnover was £40,816, just £5O/10/- short of the record turnover at the spring meeting last season. The gate receipts totalled £799. Several big dividends were recorded during the afternoon. The best was the win dividend of Sing Sing, who paid more than £36. Kaipai, second in the Novice Handicap, returned her supporters a place price of nearly £32. Kaipai is yet another of the Salmagundi breed. Maharajah’s win price in the Highweight Handicap was almost £l3.

The President’s Handicap went to Sal’s Pal, whose form in recent races pointed to early success. He was well placed throughout and only surrendered the lead when his stablemate, Good Cast, took over the role of pacemaker. The Gore-trained horses had the finish to themselves, Sal’s Pal putting up his best performance to date and winning with a lot in 'hand by a length and a half from . Good Cast. Atreus was about a length away in third place. Royal Lancer was fourth a head in front of Fair Trial. The winner and runner-up were

trained by J. R. Cochrane, of Gore, and the winner was ridden by his son, an apprentice. He made no mistake about the handling of his mount, and showed good judgment in giving him a breather at the half-mile. His form was very impressive and he is likely to come into favour for the New Zealand Cup as a result.

Good Cast’s form was in keeping with his running at the Otago Hunt meeting, where he won pointlessly. He was able to go with the field and he had sufficient in reserve to beat all but the winner at the post. The former Canterbury horse may win good handicaps in the south. ANOTHER PLACING TO ATREUS Atreus had to be content with another placing, but it was a good showing for'>his first outing this season. He finished strongly on the outside of the field. Royal Lancer showed some of his old form and although last at the one and a-half mile he outgalloped the lighter weights in the run home and finished fourth. - He is another who is’ not likely to disgrace himself in a New Zealand Cup field. Fair Trial galloped well, but appeared to get blocked when going for a run on the rails before the straight was reached. Royal Chorus ,was badly away and lost all chance at the start, and Southern Sail showed up for about a mile. SING SING’S EASY WIN Sing Sing spreadeagled the field in the Stewards Handicap and thus recorded her first win for three seasons. She jumped out well from the outside position and followed Winning Flight to the straight, where she quickly disposed of the leader and went on to win by two lengths from Winning Flight who hung on to beat the fast-finishing Silver Lily by half a length. Invulnerable just nosed Hearth out of fourth place. The start was a ragged one in which Lyndal was badly left and Sister Sal and Hearth were slow away. Winning Flight, who was taking her place in the field for the second time in two races, got a fly and raced away to a three lengths lead from Sing Sing. There was a gap back to Fleet Street, Invulnerable and Hearth. The race was more or less a procession for the leaders to the straight, where Night Lancer showed up on the outer and Silver Lily made a move. Lyndal, who had made up a lot of ground, also showed up, but nothing had a chance with the winner who romped home in easy style and returned her supporters an outsize in dividends. Lord Nuffield and Sister Sal did not threaten danger but Invulnerable, Hearth and Aurora Australis went good races. MAHARAJAH WINS HIGHWEIGHT

The Pukerau Highweight Handicap produced a good finish between the first and second horses, Maharajah, the winner, getting the verdict from Red Prize by a head. Dearo was two and a-half lengths away third, just a neck in front of Sumra, with Jack o’ Lantern next.

Astros took the lead from Red Prize and Dearo, but gave way to Red Prize at the half-mile where Maharajah was raced into a handy position. Maharajah ran past Red Prize in the straight, but the latter came again and got to within a head of Maharajah at the post. The winner is owned by Mr H. G. Mason, of Invercargill, who formerly raced Spanish Lad and other horses, and is trained at Wingatui by H. A. Anderton. He was ridden a confident race by R. J. Mackie. Alpine and Jack o’Lantern, two well fancied horses, ran in the ruck most of the way without threatening to displace the leaders. Astros. stopped badly after setting the pace and Royal Brief was always well back. Nigger Miss was slow away and Sumra finished well into fourth place. BONNY FLIGHT AGAIN Bonny Flight was backed down to a short price in the Waimea Hack Handicap and she justified the confidence of her backers by winning easily from Linloch, who finished resolutely and cut Green Note out of second money. Girl Friend was a fair fourth and Inscrutable was next.

Winning Flight was left when the barrier was released and took no part in the race. Divorced also suffered from a straggling start. Green Note made the running from Nigger Lad, Bonny

Flight and Linloch, with Great Coon and Inscrutable next. The order was much the same to the straight, where Bonny Flight was given her head and quickly disposed of Nigger Lad and Green Note. The last-named looked like getting second money when Linloch came with a rattle and beat her decisively. Pink Gauntlet lost his rider about three furlongs from home. The jockey (L. White) was not injured. NOVICE TO LISTEN IN

Listen In capped some good recent placings by winning the Novice Handicap from a big field. R. J. Mackie took her to the front from barrier rise and she led from end to end. It was an impressive performance and more should be heard’ of this Paper Money mare from Dunedin. St. Nattar, St. Quentin and Starlee followed Listen In early, but the little fancied Kaipai made her presence felt in the run home and she cut St. Nattar out of second money. Salabond ran a fair race for fourth. Signal Officer, Irish Pal and Eboness were left at barrier rise. POOR START

The Farewell Hack Handicap was marred by a poor start in which Royal Brief was left flat-footed and Prize Ring was caught side on when the barrier went up. The performance of the winner, Lance Wing, was a meritorious one, however, and it would have taken a good one to have beaten him on the day. Red Hope and Sal set a merry pace out in front, and they were followed by Lance Wing and Benbecula. Prize Ring lost fully half a dozen lengths, but he was raced up to the field and before the far turn was reached he had taken the lead from Lance Wing. Benbecula drifted and was not in the picture from then on. In the run home Lance Wing responded well and beat Prize Ring home by two and a-half lengths, with Carolyn, who finished gamely, in third place just ahead of Red Hope; then came Sal and Dash o’ Dublin. THREE IN LINE

Three horses passed the post almost in line in the Balfour Trot, Volo Bond, who led almost throughout, holding on to beat Understudy by a nose, with Arion Thorpe half a head away in third place. Grelba was fourth. Arion Thorpe was the unlucky runner of the field. He was interfered with about six furlongs from home when Larry Grattan swerved across the track and carried those behind him with him. Arion Thorpe had to make up a lot of leeway and into the straight he was standing up the leaders several lengths. He finished strongly on the outer and just failed to gather the leaders. Understudy began well and trailed the leader almost throughout, and Sandy Grey faded out after showing up in fourth place. Cumnock paced well, but was unequal to giving- away 48 yards. Grelba paced steadily, but could not foot it with the first three horses. QUITE HAPPY WINS Quite Happy, off 36 yards, had the Otama Trot won before the field entered the straight for the run to the judge. He was kept in behind the leaders over the first mile and then he tackled the leader, Sylvia Direct, and the race was as good as won. It represented good form by the Winton Juvenile Stakes winner. Sylvia Direct was one of the leaders throughout. She was followed by Grattan Bells and Trevathan and they filled third and fourth places. Liberty Bond, the back marker, paced a good race and finished fifth. Monagh Leagh showed pace in patches, but was unsteady. Elation was never prominent. The results were as follows:—
