SERVICEMEN ENTERTAINED

GLENHAM.—There was a good attendance at the Glenham Hall when the residents of the district tendered a complimentary dance to Private P. D. Johnstone, who has just returned from service in the Pacific. The evening was devoted to dancing, for which Mr W. Brown was musician and Messrs A. Ferguson, E. Rabbidge, jun., and B. Hunter were masters of ceremonies. Before supper, Mr A. Rae welcomed the guest of honour on behalf of all present. He was presented with the customary monetary gifts by Mr J. Scott, whose remarks were supported by Mr Ferguson. Private Johnstone replied. CLIFTON.—The Clifton hall was filled when residents and friends met to welcome home Private T. K. Ryan and Sapper R. M. Fisher. The guests of honour were piped to the stage by Piper C. Hall. Mr H. Smith presided and expressed great pleasure at their return. He then presented each with a framed address and a monetary gift as a mark of appreciation from the residents of the district. Messrs G. McDermott and A. McKenzie endorsed the chairman’s remarks. Mr H. Dawson made a presentation on behalf of the Victory Club. Private Ryan and Sapper Fisher replied.

OTAUTAU.—A send-off social was tendered in Otautau to A.C.2 James Millar. Mr W. J. Wesney introduced the guest and Mr A. A. Fisher spoke on behalf of the citizens. Mr A. A. Liddell, chairman of the Town Board, made a presentation and Mr A. H. Lindsay spoke on behalf of the R.S.A.

FORTROSE.— A successful card evening was held in honour of L.A.C. F. Chisholm in the Fortrose hall, when there was a good attendance. Prizes were won by: Women, Mrs O. Evans; men, Mi' H. Chisholm. Mr T. Golden, the chairman, in making a presentation, eulogized the part the Royal New Zealand Air Force was playing in the war. Mr T. Ruddenklau also expressed his best wishes and gratitude for the work Mr and Mrs Chisholm had done in the district while they had lived there. L. F. Chisholm was accorded musical honours on returning thanks. WINTON.— There was a good attendance of residents, including visiting servicemen, in the Winton Radio Hall when a social and dance was tendered to A.C.I R. Ward, who is on leave, and to welcome home Corporal A. R. Davis, who recently returned from overseas. In the absence of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor, Mr R. C. Stenhouse, conveyed best wishes to the two servicemen. A.C.I R. Ward was the youngest son of Mrs and the late Mr E. Ward and had taken an active interest in the Boys’ Brigade in Winton, he said. His brother George was in Italy and his elder brother was the first Winton soldier to pay the supreme sacrifice. On behalf of the residents Mr Stenhouse presented monetary gifts to both guests, expressing best wishes for their future welfare. Mr J. F. Harrison, president of the Winton R.S.A., conveyed greetings from the R.S.A. Both guests replied. WAEVIUMU.— A welcome home social in honour of Flight Lieutenant H. Copland was held in the Waimumu Hall. There was a large crowd of friends. The chairman was Mr B. V. Ross. Mr Ross extended a welcome to Flight Lieutenant Copland and made a presentation on behalf of the residents of the district. Other speakers included Messrs C. Weir, J. Williams (R.S.A.) and Mesdames Hayward, Peart and McLeod; Items were given during the evening by Misses Hobbs and Mitchell (Gore), Miss Linklater and Mr E. Goodwin. Mr R. B.
