Notes for Women

Mrs P. Frampton, Duke street, leaves today to visit Christchurch. Mrs Forbes Williams, Gala street, is visiting Owaka. Mrs S. F. Curie has returned to Queenstown after a visit to Invercargill. Mrs F. Polson has returned to Christchurch after being the guest of Mrs A. W. Rodger, Alice street. Surgeon Commander R. Kennedy, 0.8. E., and Mrs Kennedy are the guests of Mrs J. S. Royds, Queenstown. Mrs P. J. Fotheringham, Clyde street, returned on Saturday from a holiday spent at Christchurch and Dunedin. Miss Margery Fitzgerald, a V.A.D., who has been spending leave from the Pacific with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. H. Fitzgerald, Eye street, will leave for the north tomorrow. Motions of sympathy with the relations of two club members, Mrs C. S. Longuet and Mrs W. S. Todd, whose deaths occurred recently, were passed at the birthday party of the Southland Women’s Club on Saturday night. A former pupil of the Auckland Girls Grammar School, Miss Rua Isohel Gardner, M.A., of Wellington, has been appointed by the Auckland Grammar School Board to be headmistress of the school in succession to Miss E. M. Johnston, M.A., who will retire in December after nine years’ service. Miss Johnston was at one time principal of the Southland Girls’ High School. Miss Cynthia Elliott, who was married a few months ago to Mr Leslie Hore-Belisha, M.P., a former Secretary of State for War, wore for her wedding, at . the Norbiton Registry Office, a bright yellow frock and black gloves. She is the only daughter of Mrs Gilbert Elliott, who after the wedding gave a cocktail party at her flat in Orchard Court. The guests included many foreign ambassadors and the bridegroom’s stepfather, Sir Adair Hore. Mrs W. S. Todd, whose death occured last week, was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Garden, of Clinton. She was one- 1 of a family of eight sisters and seven brothers. She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, and for many years was a member of the Southland Womens Club. Mrs Todd is survived by her husband, one son, Mr G. M. Todd, and a daughter, Mrs J. C. Prain. Mrs N. B. Jeffries, Don street, is a sister. BIRTHDAY PARTY Southland Women’s Club The presentation of a small posy of spring flowers to each guest was repeated at this year’s birthday party of the Women’s Club, held on Saturday | night. Bowls of spring flowers also decorated the rooms. The president, Mrs , J. D. Gilmore, welcomed the members and stated that this was the twentythird birthday of the club. The candles on the cake were blown out by Mrs Gilmore and a past president, Mrs Ritchie Crawford. Miss O. Rein presented Mrs Gilmore with a basket of hyacinths. Greetings were extended to the club by the chairmen of the circles: Miss O. Rein, Garden Circle; Mrs C. Lange, Arts and Crafts Circle; Mrs Stanley Brown, Music Circle; Mrs A. M. Macdonald, Play-Reading Circle; Mrs W. J. Jones, Spinning Circle; Mrs Ritchie Crawford, Patriotic Guild; and Mrs T. E. Davis, Bridge Circle. Each circle was responsible for a section ■of the programme. An Arts and Crafts Circle competition was won by Mrs T. Mathews. The items given by the Music Circle were a pianoforte double duo by Mrs A. Walmsley, Mrs A. Richardson, Mrs F. Jones and Mrs A. E. H. Bath, songs by Mrs E. K. Mills and Mrs D. Grey, and a pianoforte solo by Mrs Richardson. The.accompaniments were played by Mrs Bath and Mrs Richardson. Members of the Play-Reading Circle presented a one-act play, “Mr Hackett s Alibi,” with Mrs H. R. Kingsland, Mrs M. M. Macdonald, Mrs W. J. Jones, Mrs A. M. Macdonald and Miss P. Drewe in the cast. An entertaining feature of the even-, ing was the mannequin parade, “Fashion Whispers,” presented by the Bridge Circle. The hats modelled represented bridge plays and typesof players and were cleverly designed. The mannequins were Mrs W. Macalister, Miss O. Rein, Mrs J. Ballantyne, Mrs W. W. Millar and Mrs R. Robb. Mrs W. H. Crookes, the producer, read the commentary and a musical accompaniment was played by Mrs F. Jones. A display of samples of the work done by the Patriotic Guild was exhibited, including garments made recently for the Lady Galway Guild. The Mayoress, Mrs A. Wachner, thanked members of the circles who had taken part in the evening’s entertainment.
