FOOD SUPPLIES FOR GREECE

New Zealand Shipment (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 1. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, announced today that arrangements had been completed for the immediate dispatch to the Middle East of a substantial shipment of foodstuffs which were to be made available to the people of Greece as a gift from the Government and people of New Zealand immediately the territory was freed. Stating that this country was bound by special ties to the people of Greece, Mr Fraser said that the arrangements represented the fulfilment of an intention, which the' Government long had in mind, to make some special gesture to a nation which' had suffered so cruelly under the scourge of the Nazi oppressor. Now that the tide had turned it was appropriate to recall the friendship and help which the Greeks extended to our men throughout the whole of the Greek campaign. The fullest co-operation in the matter of shipping had been extended by the United Kingdom authorities, and the foodstuffs would be among the first re-

lief supplies to reach Greece after her liberation. “As a result of my discussions with the UNRRA authorities and the Allied military liaison in the Middle East, a procedure has been devised to ensure that goods which have been appropriately marked to indicate their origin and purpose will be distributed to cases of special need,” said Mr Fraser.
