Wachner, received the following telegram from the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser:—“This personal message is to point out the urgent need for the Victory Loan being fully subscribed before closing day, next Wednesday. The money is required to ensure payment to servicemen and their dependents and to meet accounts of the United Kingdom for war equipment, transport and other services. Your co-operation would be sincerely appreciated.” According to the district organizer, Mr W. G. Nield, the highlight of the loan campaign in Southland has been the good results obtained through national savings deposits and the sale of Victory bonds. He said that the total to date from these sources was £337,983. He expected that several more district objectives would be obtained through- national savings deposits and bond sales. He added that he thought Southland was fully determined to win the first honour banner by being the first province to reach its objective. If Southland responded in the closing days of the loan, as he was confident it would, the objective should be reached on Tuesday night. He urged all who had not yet subscribed to the loan to act at once. The sale of Victory bonds in the vestibule of the Chief Post Office on Saturday morning brought in £4OO. DISTRICT CONTRIBUTIONS The Victory ball held at Nightcaps on Friday evening was a big success. The sum of £5BO was received in loan investments towards Nightcap’s quota. The Underwood . Milk Condensery Employees’ Union has invested £5O in the loan.

The wheelbarrow race held at Otautau on Saturday evening resulted in £205 being raised for the loan. Mr A. Harrington was the winner. The prizes, which were Victory bonds donated by Thomson and McKenzie, sawmillers, were presented by Mr A. A. Liddell, chairman of the Otautau War Loan Committee.
