Sporting FIRST IN IS IN FAVOUR

Otago Hunt Fixture Today

First In, the promising young mare in D. P. Wilson’s stable, holds her ground as ante-post favourite for the Tally Ho Handicap at Wingatui today. She is four years old and is by Siegfried from Gobble. At her last start, at Geraldine last week, she won going away from pie field, and since she has given every indication of running out a solid mile, she must be given a second to none chance off the minimum (7.0). Aurora Australis has come into favour in the last few days. She did not race up to expectations at the Grand National meeting, but since then she has done well and in her track work at Wingatui she has impressed the critics. A return to her three-year-old form when she spread-eagled her fields several times, including the Hazlett Gold Cup field, would give her a first-class chance of success. Another mare in the field likely to show up over a mile is the Wingatuitrained Silver Lily, who has won twice and been placed once in her last six starts. She will be ridden by the promising Invercargill apprentice, B. S. Wil-' son. Sal’s Pal retains his position dmong the favourites and on his- latest performances he should justify the confidence in his ability to race well in open company. Others among the favoured division include Kevin, a winner at the Grand National fixture and second at Ashburton, Fair Trial, Platform and Sir Saladin. The issue is very open. Aidrie and Timber Topper are the

popular selections for the Hunt Club Steeplechase. Both performed well in the winter and are more seasoned than some of the others. Donadea has fallen in three of six starts over fences; he is a bold fencer and he has more pace than the average jumper. If he could be relied upon to stand up he would be hard to beat. Sir Percy is likely to set a merry pace out in front in the early stages; he is a possibility on recent track work.

The following horses may race well:—

The weather at Wingatui early this morning was very cold. A southerly wind again blew and, though it made conditions unpleasant, it is assisting to dry out the track. The majority of the large number of horses on the course were worked at from half to strong I pace work. One or two were tried out against the watch, but were not alllowed fully to extend themselves. I Sir Saladin was going better than Steward at the finish of four furlongs in 57. _ Kevin ran home from the halfmile in the same time, being well on the move when he reached the peg. Erin’s Pal, a two-year-old, sprinted three furlongs near the rails in 39. His trainer stated this morning that Night Pal would not be a starter in the Seaview Hurdles.

Thoraide is in a bad way as the result of a fall while schooling on Thursday and a veterinary surgeon had to be summoned this morning. Airdrie has ricked a knee and may not be able to run in the Hunt Club Steeplechase.

Following are some of the riding engagements: B. J. Langford, Bath Slipper, Arabian Night, Maharajah, Mossburn; R. Heasley, Albino, Timber Topper, Steward; W. Shand, Nightcalm (K. Wilson if started in the Hunters’ Flat); E. Hunt, Crinkle; F. Boyle, Boloyna, Shadow Boy; T. Boyle, Whirr and Boloyna (if started in the Hunters’ Flat); N. Crombie, Dearo, Notary, First In; D.
