SANCTUARY FOR AXIS LEADER
Neutral Nations Warned
WASHINGTON, September 28,
Neutral nations have been warned that they will lose American friendship for years to come if sanctuary is given to Hitler or other Axis leaders. After this was disclosed by the Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, at a Press conference today Mr Hull said that Sweden, Turkey, Switzerland and Spain had either given assurances that they would not permit Axis nationals to flee into their borders or that they were fully aware of the problems such action might provoke. Mr Hull added that certain other governments had not yet indicated their view. The State Department was continuing to impress upon them the importance attached to their taking adequate measures to ensure that Axis war criminals did not find asylum in their countries. Mr Hull said that the United States had the support and approval of the British and Russian Governments in bringing this pressure. The Soviet Embassy in Washington stated that the Russians’ participation in the war settlement would provide the best guarantee that Hitler would not escape punishment as Kaiser Wilhelm did.
