THREE COMEDIES
Season Begins Monday
On Monday night at the Civic Theatre J. C. Williamson’s incomparable comedy company will begin its season of three nights in a production of the remarkably successful comedy-drama, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” which has been running continuously for over four years in New York. It is still the reigning theatrical attraction there. Only the one performance can be given of Joseph Kesselring’s brilliant play, and on Tuesday evening the company will stage Rose Franken’s delightful, intriguing and sophisticated domestic comedy, “Claudia.” The name part will be portrayed by the talented young New Zealand actress, Bettina Welch. On Wednesday night the season will be brought to a close with Hugh Herbert’s joyful and vei-y human comedy, “Kiss and Tell,” which is in its tenth month in Melbourne, thus breaking the wonderful records established there by “Arsenic and Old Lace” and “Claudia.” Recently it thrilled and delighted large audiences in Dunedin, where it had its New Zealand premiere. In each of the three productions Lloyd Lamble, the leading actor of the company, will appear in totally different characters. Neva Carr Glyn, the principal lady, will appear as the glamorous and colourful Madame Daruschka in “Claudia,” and in the big role of Janet Archer in “Kiss and Tell.”
