ENEMY DESTROYER DRIVEN ASHORE

(8.0.W.) RUGBY, May 7. Early this morning light coastal forces of the Royal Navy carried out an attack on an Elbing class destroyer, which was driven ashore by the Canadian ship, Haida, after an engagement off lie De Vierge, near Ushant, and was subsequently further damaged by the Royal Air Force. The destroyer, which was torpedoed amidships, was completely destroyed. Shore batteries opened fire on our ships without effect.
