EASTER MONDAY RACING

SECOND DAY AT RIVERTON

Fair Trial And Noko Again SIR SALADIN TAKES CHAMPION HACK Another large crowd saw the second day programme of the Riv- . erton Racing Club yesterday. The meeting was held in fine weather and the racing was full of interest, even though the going was heavy and some of the fields were on the small side. The club was rewarded for its enterprise in providing good stakes by seeing the totalizator turnover and gate receipts well up on those of the second day last year. The totalizator handled £43,671/10/- compared with £35,351 last year, an increase of £8320. For the two days the total was £83,435/10/-" compared with £81,035/10/- last year, an increase of £2400. The gate receipts yesterday totalled £1264/13/- compared with £945/12/-, an increase of >£3l9/1/-. “Doubles” were completed by Fair Trial, Noko and Sir Saladin, winners of the Easter Handicap, Riverton Steeplechase and Southern Champion Hack Handicap respectively. P. ,J. Boyle rode three winners at the meeting—all over the steeplechase course—and B. S. Wilson, an apprentice, signalled his entry to the winning list yesterday by riding two winners in successive races. The best dividends of the day were those returned by Paybook, whose win price was over £2l, and Latest Song, who paid a win dividend of more than '£22.. DOUBLE COMPLETED Fair Trial completed a good double by winning the Easter Handicap after a good race up the straight with Sing Sing. The race was run at a middling pace and took nearly five seconds longer to complete than did the Riverton Cup on Saturday. Sing Sing was taken into the lead at the end of a furlong and Fair Trial trailed the field. They cantered in close order for about six furlongs, when Fairy Bard ran up on the rails behind Sing Sing and Fair Trial ranged up alongside Doubleack and Platform. Sing Sing clapped on the pace and was followed into the straight by Fair Trial (on the outer), and the pair went away from the field. Fair Trial soon had Sing Sing’s measure, but he had to be ridden out to beat Sing Sing by half a length. Platform raced disappointingly and finished third, four lengths away; then came Doubleack and Fairy Bard. Fair Trial returned his backers a “Gloaming” price. He had the race won a long way from home. Another outstanding performance was registered by Noko, the Great Western winner; he carried 12.9 in the Riverton Steeplechase and won well after making the running for two miles of the two and a-half miles journey. He had a life at the brush fence leading to the water jump, but otherwise gave a brilliant display. He was again ridden by P. J. Boyle, whose handling of his mount was exemplary. Half a mile from home La Boca was Noko’s nearest attendant and it looked as if he might make a race of it with Noko, but he tired badly and finished last. ’ / Spanish Main, bracketed with the winner, finished a good second to Noko. He fenced without making a mistake and had enough in reserve to put in a good chanliege to Noko in the run home. Shadow Boy took the lead early, but lost ground when he screwed at the sod wall. Thereafter he jumped well and beat La Boca for third money. CHAMPION HACK Consistency was rewarded when Sir Saladin, taking the best part of the track, wide out, in the run home in the Southern Champion Hack Handicap, hung on long enough to hold off a strong challenge by Sal’s Pal. The margin was threequarters of a length in favour of Sir Saladin, with Moneybird a long neck away in third place. Boolamskee was a neck away fourth; Riding Home was fifth and Great Coon sixth. Air Chief, Georgia, Coy and Moneybird were slow away. Moneybird was rushed to the front and she led Sir Saladin and Boolamskee over the first half. Sir Saladin then took the lead and showed the way to Moneybird, Boolamskee and Sal’s Pal, with Great Coon also handy. The leader hung on well and Sal’s Pal, finishing strongly, beat Moneybird for second money. The success of Sir Saladin marked his third win in succession. He was second to Platform in the Champion Hack event last year. FLEET STREET SCORES

Fleet Street demohstrated that he is anything but a back number by winning the • Flying Handicap narrowly from Monetary. Winning Flight and Sister Sal were slow away, but Winning Flight was quickly taken up to the leaders. Green Note shaded Winning Flight into the straight, where Fleet Street put in his claim and Sister Sal showed up. Fleet Street had no sooner got clear than Monetary put in a strong run on the rails and just failed To reach the winner by a nose. Sister Sal and Winning Flight dropped out and Crinkle got up in time to beat Green Note by a nose for third place. Threequarters of a length separated the second and third horses. Of the five starters in the Otaitai Steeplechase only two stood up and they finished first and second. Minton won comfortably from Young Squatter by seven lengths, and Timber Topper, who fell when going well, was remounted and completed the course for third money. Court Talk fell early in the race and Red Wind lost his rider after jumping the second leg of the brush double. Minton gave an improved display and stayed on better than he did the first day. SUCCESS OF PAYBOOK In a good finish in the Novice Handicap Paybook, who was always well placed in the leading division, stayed on under pressure and beat Immediate by a short length. After the field settled down Legislator and Makarewa disputed the lead, with Makarewa heading the next division. Immediate put in his claim on the turn into the straight and challenged Legislator, with Paybook handy. In the run home Paybook hung on well and beat Immediate by a length, with Dearo, who came from well back, finishing on into third place a neck away. Then came Siegform, Legislator, Linloch, Depth Charge and Makarewa. Latest Song had an all-the-way win

in the Wallace Handicap for apprentices and gave B. S. Wilson (apprenticed to T. E.Pankhurst) his first winning ride. She was got out smartly and at the end of three furlongs was three lengths clear of the field. First into the straight from Inscrutable, Depth Charge and Dark Colleen, Latest Song finished well and beat Inscrutable by two and a-half lengths, with Carolyn, who finished fast, a length away third, then came Depth Charge and Southern Wave. The winner returned a win dividend of more than £22. The Monowai Handicap produced a good finish in which Sal’s Pal, vigorously ridden by the apprentice B. S. Wilson, got up on the post to nose Compeer out of the decision. Compeer followed Nightcalm in the lead and before the straight was reached he had taken the lead, with Araboa, Nightcalm, Royal Flight (who was slow away) and Sal’s Pal handy. Compeer looked to have the race won when Sals “al put in his claim and caught Compeer on the post. Nightcalm was third threequarters of a length away and Boloyna was fourth. Southern Sail was last all the way. Results:
