SEVERE FIGHTING IN CHINA

(Rec. 10 p.m.) CHUNGKING, Feb. 22. After thrice failing to cross the Salween river Japanese forces turned north against Mangpeng. Chinese forces intercepted them and bitter fighting is continuing, says a Chinese communique. Severe fighting is also reported southeast of Fengchin in Kiangsi Province. The Japanese brought up reinforcements and reached Tangpu, Chuntsieng and Huchengpu. The Chinese are stubbornly resisting the invading columns.
