Heavy Loss Of Life
WASHINGTON, February 22.
The loss of 850 people, mostly Army, Navy and Coastguard personnel, in the sinking of two medium-sized American passenger and cargo ships, is announced by the Navy Department. The ships were sunk by submarines in the North Atlantic early in February and within four days of each other. Both were torpedoed at night and sank within 30 minutes. Six hundred of 900 were lost in the first ship and 250 of 500 in the second vessel. The Navy Department also announced that a minesweeper capsized in heavy seas off Coos Bay, Oregon. Five of the crew are dead and 13 are missing. Eleven were rescued.
