ATTACKS ON ENEMY SHIPPING

(8.0.W.) RUGBY, February 22. Many successful attacks by British submarines on enemy shipping are. recorded in an Admiralty communique which states that two medium-sized supply ships have been destroyed and three others damaged by British submarines operating in the Mediterranean. Four of these attacks were made off the Italian coast, one off the north coast of Sicily, and one off the eastern Tunisian coast where enemy shore batteries ineffectually replied. A large tanker, west bound under a destroyer escort, was hit by two torpedoes and was probably sunk. Off the southern Italian coast the submarines sank one medium-sized supply ship and torpedoed another which was subsequently seen to run aground. A small vessel at anchor was also torpedoed. Two small supply ships were sighted close inshore and were shelled despite the fire of the enemy shore batteries. Both were seriously damaged. A large supply ship escorted by destroyers was attacked off the east coast of Sicily and was hit by a torpedo but it is not known if she sank.
