OBITUARY
MR S. C, RATHBONE (P.A.) WANGANUI, October 1. The death has occurred of Mr Sydney Cuthbert Rathbone, of Wanganui, at the age of 82. He was born in Liverpool and came to New Zealand in 1885 and engaged in goldmining. Later he prospected for cinnabar in North Auckland, subsequently farming in the Kaipara district until 1911, when he came to Wanganui. Mr Rathbone was a foundation member of the Legion of Frontiersmen in Wanganui and was the second oldest member of that body in New Zealand and was one of the few to be awarded the pioneer axe. In the last war he volunteered for service when 56 and went to Samoa on garrison duty. Mr Rathbone is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons, Mr F. L. Rathbone (Auckland) and Mr K. C. Rathbone (Vancouver). MR W. H. WOODCOCK (P.A.) WESTPORT, October 1. Thq death occurred suddenly today at Westport of Mr William Henry Woodcock, a native of Oamaru. He was 71 years of age. A stalwart of Labour, he was president of the Westport Labour Party for 20 years, a past secretary of the Labour Representation Committee, president of the Watersiders’ Union and chief organizer at the elections of the late Mr H. E. Holland and the present member for Buller, the Hon. P. C. Webb.
