APPEAL DISMISSED
Waik&to Union Official (Special) AUCKLAND, September 28. The appeal made by the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners for the exemption of Edward Arthur Waters, district organizer, was dismissed by the Hamilton No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board. The reservist was given one month's postponement of service. The appeal was heard by the No.. 1 board last month, but as the reservist was a deputy-member of the board it was decided to refer the matter to the No. 2 board for decision. The assistant-secretary of the society, Mr D. M. Martin, said that Waters gave valuable service in adjusting differences between employers and workers and in assisting the Waikato Defence Works Committee in allotting men for essential work. Mr Martin said there was a lack of co-ordination between the district man-power and placement officers and Waters supplied it. The chairman of the Defence Works Committee, Mr W. B. Young, described Waters as a very efficient union official who was tactful and helpful in dealing with the men and in assisting the committee. His retention would make things easier for the employers. In discussing the appeal, the board said Government machinery already existed for doing the work Waters had been doing for builders engaged on essential work.
