CITY’S SAVINGS RECORD
“RAISING THE WIND” AT LAST MINUTE On Saturday morning a sum of £BOO was required to bring the city’s National Savings total for the week up to the quota of £2043. The necessary sum was secured and the V flag hoisted, at the post office. On a Saturday morning a few weeks ago the position seemed even more hopelss. A sum of £l3OO was neded; yet it was obtained by midday. When asked how he managed to raise such large sums of money on a Saturday morning, Mr W. G. Nield, the district organizer said: “Well, it is not because, as some people say, I have a balance up my sleeve. Neither is it because we have more in hand than the money ball on the post office shows. The fact is that the telephone has had to be used extensively on Saturday mornings in .tapping prospects ana seeking the assistance of public-spirited and interested citizens. One leading citizen has been instrumental in obtaining several substantial contributions from among his clients, friends and business associates. On the Saturday morning that we required £l3OO he telephoned and said that I had better put up the flag as £lOOO was coming from a certain quarter. Disappointment at the prospect of missing the bus that week was immediately turned to jubiliation. Last Saturday £BOO was required and time was dragging on when an unexpected purchase of £447 worth of National Savings bonds was made and the balance was soon secured by telephone calls.” Mr Nield added that Invercargill had reached its National Savings quota for 45 weeks in succession, and. he hoped that the citizens would assist to the best of their ability to maintain the record for a full year.
