FORMER SOUTHLANDER KILLED

Sub-lieutenant Andrew Raines, of the Fleet Air Arm, whose death in an aircraft accident overseas has been reported, was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Victor Raines, of Dunedin, and formerly of Invercargill. Sub-lieuten-ant Raines, who was 21 years of age, left New Zealand in May 1941, to join the Fleet Air Arm, in which he received his commission on June last. He was educated at the Southland Boys’ High School and the King’s High School, and was the champion rifle shot of each of these schools. He was also a member of the first Rugby fifteen at the King’s High School. Sub-lieutenant Raines became a member of the Pirates Football Club, Dunedin. He took a leading part in the activities of the St. Clair Surf LifeSaving Club, and was a member of the committee. Some years ago he was a member of the team from the club which won the New Zealand Junior Surf Life-Saving Championship. Before enlisting for service with the Fleet Air Arm, he was employed by Dalgety and Company, Limited.
