CERTIFICATE FOR LIBERALITY

Proposal Not Favoured A proposal made at the meeting of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee last night that a certificate should be issued to people who gave liberally to the patriotic fund met with disapproval. The chairman, Mr P. L. Hodge, said that the proposal had been made to him and it had been suggested that it should be forwarded to the National Patriotic Fund Board, Wellington, with a suggestion that the certificate should be of a Dominion character and should be signed by the Governor-General. “I hope the suggestion will be turned down," said a member and several other members signified their agreement with this opinion. “The gift of the man who gives sixpence, if that is all he can afford, is just as good as the gilt of the man who gives £100,” said Miss D. de Lany. Mr J. Pickard: I quite agree. Mrs J. R. Hanan said that much of the money that was collected regularly for the patriotic fund was collected in sixpences and shillings from people who could not afford more. Mr Hodge: You mean that the widows mite is just as valuable as the rich man’s £1000?
