EXORBITANT PRICE OF APPLES

Delicious 17/6 a Case (Special) DUNEDIN, September 25. The Marketing Department has again advanced the prices of apples, supplies of which are at present on the short side. The prices now ruling cannot be considered otherwise than exorbitant—up to 17/6 a case for Delicious—in view of the fact that the grower in the first instance received only 4/- to 6/- a case from the Marketing Department, which must at the present time be showing - a handsome profit on its apple business. The position in respect to pears is very similar. The wholesale price today for dessert pears is 10/- a halfcase, but the grower receives only 2/10. The department, it may be added, has to bear the cost of cool store charges.
