AUSTRALIAN SPORT THREATENED

(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 17. Because of restrictions on the use of rubber, football, tennis, golf and cycling are threatened with extinction for the duration of the war. The position is acute and executives of sporting clubs will make representations to the Federal Government. It will be urged that it is necessary to maintain the morale of the public by way of sport, which also plays a big part in national fitness.

Unless bladders are obtainable footballers in the near future may be compelled to play the game with a case stuffed with rag. Present stocks of golf balls are sufficient to last the season, but afterwards it may be an occasion for reverting to the “featheries” of olden days.
