The Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, who visited the Southland coalfields during the week-end, returned to Invercargill last evening. This morning he will make an inspection of the Post Office and later he will leave for Kaitarigata and Dunedin. At Kaitangata he will address the miners on the necessity for the maximum output of coal.
Mr L. R. Lopdell returned to Invercargill yesterday from Wellington, where he attended a council meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union. A . Mr D. F. Radford, a clerk in the telegraph engineer’s office at the Chief Post Office for the last three years, has been transferred to Wanganui. He left Invercargill on Saturday. Mr E. G. Truscott, manager of the Invercargill branch of J. R. McKenzie Ltd., leaves today to begin military duties. Mr W. F. Owen, stationmaster at Otautau, has been transferred to the position of senior clerk at Ashburton. His place will be taken by Mr R. McDonald, of Lumsden, and Mr L. L. Macintosh, of Invercargill, will be transferred to Lumsden.
Sergeant Observer J. G. Taylor, son of Mr and Mrs J. Taylor, Janet street, has been promoted to the rank of pilot officer.
Mr T. Lynch, who is in charge of the outwards goods branch at the Invercargill railway station, will retire at the end of this month. He will be succeeded by Mr W. T. Anderson, of the Invercargill staff.
Sergeant-Pilot W. Kennedy has arrived safely in the Middle East from Great Britain according to advice received by his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Kennedy, Fox street. Advice has been received by his relations in Invercargill that Driver Thomas Blight, who was dangerously ill suffering from severe burns, is now off the dangerously ill list. Mrs Corkery, of Te WaeWae, has received advice that her son, John, has been promoted to the rank of sublieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm.
