RATA DEFEATED BY ST. MARY’S The outstanding feature of Saturday’s play in the Southland Basketball Union’s competition was the defeat of the Rata team by St. Mary’s. Rata had been unbeaten in the last season and this season and had shown signs of continuing its run of successes. On Saturday, however, the team had an offday and St. Mary's played an inspired game. Makarewa and High School were the other winners in the senior grade. Details of the results were as follows: — FIRST GRADE MATCHES St. Mary’s beat Rata 13-11. The Rata attacks were definitely off form and made a poor showing, while St. Mary’s turned on the best play of the season. It was a fine display against a team which appeared to be disorganized and cff its usually sound positional play. High School beat Stuarts 18-11.—High School did well to beat Stuarts which was suffering from a mixed lot of new players. The school team showed dash and spirit and scored freely. Makarewa beat Kew Nurses 18-12.—Kew Nurses did not start well and by the time the team had settled down Makarewa had too big a lead to be overtaken. OTHER GRADES Second grade.—Makarewa beat Rata 18-4; Pirates beat Woodlands. 21-13; Bluff beat Technical. 29-11; Collegiate A beat Collegiate B, 8-3; St. Mary’s beat High School, 15-13. Third grade.—Rata beat Collegiate, 27-14; Makarewa beat McKenzies, 21-8; Kennington and Stuarts drew, 16-all; Roslyn Bush beat St. Mary’s, 26-18; Bluff and Technical drew, 13-all. .... Fourth grade.—Makarewa and Collegiate A drew 8-all; Technical beat Collegiate B, 11-0.
