The engagement is announced of Brenda Waude, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Parley, Compton street, InvercargiU, ana Vicraftman Horace John, elder son of Mr md Mrs J. R. Longson, Temuka. Mrs L. A. Niederer, Gorge road, is visting Dunedin. Miss N. Rice returned to Wyndham on Saturday from a visit to Dunedin. Miss R. Israel, who has been the guest ot Mrs L. J. Israel, Wellington street, has retoned to Dunedin. Miss F. A. Adams, who has been spending i few days with friends in Invercargill, returned to Timaru on Sunday. Mrs T. G. Robertson and Miss Eileen Robertson, Greymouth, are the guests of Mrs T. Robertson, jun., Rugby street. The last of the series of Plunket Aid lectures will be held on Wednesday evening when a demonstration of children s foods will be given. . „ Mrs T. H. Jenkin will give a talk on etchings to members of the Arts’ and Crafts Circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Wednesday, June 17, at 2.45 p.m. Lady Newall has consented to become patroness of the North American Club, Christchurch, and Dr W. A. Riddell, High Commissioner for Canada, has accepted the office of patron of the club. Nearly 400 women are employed on postmen’s duties throughout the Dominion. Women are also driving the Post and telegraph Department’s motor vehicles, including lorries, and some are proving efficient as mechanicians in the telephone exchanges and workshops. The Tuturau W.D.F.U. celebrated its eighth birthday by holding i concert and dance in the hall, the proceeds going to the Red Cross. The programme included items by Flower and Sunny Mackay, Mr Paul Nutsford, Mrs R. F. Dickie. Miss I. Mitchell, Miss Christiansen, Miss Harvey and Mr Rhind. The president, Mrs C. L. Humphries, thanked all who had helped to make the evening such a success. Before her departure to take up a position on the secondary staff of the Marton District High School, Miss A. M. Cox, 8.A., was entertained at an evening by the staff ot the Waihopai School and presented with a cheque by the head master, Mr A. Thomson. Miss Cox has been on the staff of the Waihopai School as junior mistress for the last three years. Miss Cox left for the north on Saturday. Mrs O. Murray, of Invercargill, has been appointed temporary relieving mistress in place of Miss Cox. The wedding took place in England on March 23 of Dr W. S. Bullough, lecturer in zoology, Leeds University, and Dr Helen Florence Gibbs (Wellington). The bride was given away by her father, Mr A. Gibbs, M.I.E.E. (formerly chief telegraph engineer, Wellington). The bride was bom at Dunedin, matriculated at Queen Margaret College, Wellington, graduated B.Sc. at Victoria College, Wellington, and obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leeds, where she was awarded the Ackroyd Research Fellowship in Zoology, which she has held for three years. WEDDING GARRICK—ELLIS The wedding was solemnized recently at First Church, Invercargill, of Melva Margaret, eldest daughter of Mr T. H. Ellis and the late Mrs Ellis, Waitane and formerly of Edendale, and Allan, youngest son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Garrick, Joseph street, Gore. The Rev. F. B. Barton, Gore, performed the ceremony and Mrs A. F. Manning played the organ. Miss Gertie Ellis attended her sister as bridesmaid and Mr Gordon Garrick, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man. The reception was held in H. and J. Smith’s tea rooms. PRESENTATION TO BROWNS SOLDIER A large crowd assembled in the Browns Hall when a social was held in honour of Private Colin Mcßae. In making a presentation, Mr L. Dalzell spoke of the popularity of the guest of the evening and presented him with a well-filled envelope and a parcel from the Women’s Division. Other presentations were made by Thelma Gray on behalf of the school children and Mr J. Silke on behalf of his fellow work-mates. Other speakers were Messrs J. F. Ashley, R. Gray and D. Hardy. Visiting soldiers were Sergeant-Major Young, Driver Norman, Trooper Geary and Privates Campbell, Roberson, Earl, Fraser, Shearer, Pettigrew and Mcllwrick, each of whom was presented with cigarettes. Private Campbell replied on their behalf. The guests of the evening were piped to the stage by piper Gilmour.
