PEOPLE’S SPIRIT.— The spirit of the people was the title of a national service broadcast talk last night by the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., president of the New Zealand Returned Services Association, a member of the War Council. "A nation at war is composed of two parts—the fighting forces and the non-fighting section—but they are complementary to each other,” Mr Perry said. The fighting men had to be supported by the spirit of the people. The enemy was at the gates of Australia and New Zealand and no one knew where the next blow might fall. The people must prepare themselves. The fighting forces gave a splendid example of personal service and they deserved the support of a similar spirit from tire civilians. “They shall not land” might be the watchword of the day and if all did their duty it would be no idle boast. SOCIAL AT CLIFTON—A social in honour of Signalman R. G. McKenzie was held In the Clifton Hall. There was a good attendance which included visitors from Woodend, Tisbury and the adjacent districts. Mr E. McKenzie handed Signalman McKenzie a gift and expressed the good wishes of those present. Visiting soldiers were presented with gifts of cigarettes.
